The slow gait of the animals ensures you take in every minute of the landscape from the glittering sands and sand dunes, the sun sinking in the horizon, citadels, colors and charming crowds, to camels walking about everywhere. Taking shelter in an oasis will make a unique experience. Once you are through you will no longer find the desert boring and lifeless.
You will also stumble upon the remotest villages. The sight of the villagers dressed in their traditional costumes is a feast for the eyes. Women with vivid orange and green skirts and men with white dhotis and colorful turbans. The aroma of home-cooked food heavy with pure ghee from tiny little houses will get your gastronomic pangs licking. Apart from that, you will enjoy listening to scintillating tunes of folksy music played by village musician on a four-stringed sarangi. The village-stops are a great way to mingle and learn their culture.
The nights are as entertaining. You will sleep under the starry skies with only the gentle whispers of the wind to disturb you as you slowly drift to sweet dreams. Not to mention, you will be accommodated in tiny make-shift or modern camps depending on your budget.
The favored safari routes are in the vicinity of Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Osian and Khimsar. Some safaris range from one day to 2 to 7 while the longer ones run for a month.
Recommended Time: The best time is in winter when Rajasthan’s weather is good. Most of the camel safaris are organized during the months of November to March because the days are cool at this time. Summers are unbearably hot and dry.
Dos and Dont’s: Bring lots of woolen clothes and warm jackets. Remember, desert nights drop dead cold. A warm sleeping bag is recommended. Take frequent breaks for stretching your legs and walk for a period of time each day. Don a large rimmed sun hat at all times and splurge on sunscreen lotion.
