| Romance of Sands |
If you want to experience rustic life, climb atop tall camels and explore the sandy expanse of the desert stretching to nowhere for miles and miles. Visit a local village and befriend the people and watch them work their hands at pottery making or carpet weaving.
A walk in the sand is in itself an experience. Feel your feet sinking knee deep in soft sands as you practise your gait, hobbling and staggering till you become a seasoned walker. Otherwise, try hot air ballooning. The sight of the endless golden stretch of sand from above will leave you speechless. If you are an adventure freak, hire a jeep and practise some sand bashing as you chase the shifting sand dunes.
Nevertheless, the best memories would be your night at a camp under the skies with nothing but the twinkling stars to keep you company.
There are few cities amidst the desert that are thronged by visitors. Jaisalmer is one such place. The city is perched atop Trikuta Hill standing in majesty towering against miles of gleaming sands right at the heart of the Thar. This city is a dream in yellow having plenty of golden forts built of yellow sandstone and sparkles gloriously in the early morning.
Jodhpur, the elite city popularly known as the land of Royalty, sparkles in the midst of the desert. The city is inhabited by equally vibrant and colourful people dressed in garish attires and heavy jewellery. The city is graced by towering forts and palaces. An added attraction to the place is the Sam Sand Dunes. This popular tourist hotspot is 3 kms long, 1 km wide rising as high as half a km high. The picturesque beauty of the place is best experienced through an overnight trip. The Khuri Sand Dune is also getting increasingly popular too. Just 40 kms off Jaisalmer, the quaint rustic village is a charmer. The people live in huts made of mud and straw looking like patterns of a Persian rug.
The majestic city of Bikaner is another famous desert city. It is noted particularly for its massive walls and the 16th century fort that encloses old palaces, temples and mosque. It stands lofty amidst rippling sands looking much like a mirage.
