Jaigarh Fort |
Jaigarh Fort stands 15 kms away from Rajasthan capital city Jaipur. It is considered one of the most spectacular forts in India having almost all its original facilities intact. It is connected to another famous fort, Amber, standing at the base of the hill through an intricate system of passageways. Though not as opulent as other forts of the state, Jaigarh has it own charm revealing in depth the military might of the rulers. The Fort served as an important centre for weapons production in the bygone era.
The foundry of the Fort has survived till date to become one of the remaining medieval foundries worldwide. There is also an armoury, Vijay Garh, where huge collection of swords and small arms and time bombs are on display as well 1681 map of Amber.
The Fort displays the level of mastery achieved by the Rajput artisans. Apart from the military splendour, it is recognised for the rain water harvesting system employed here with wide water reservoir that can store 60,00,000 gallons of water and several water channels.
To learn in full the grandeur of Jaigarh Fort, head to the museum of artefacts that has an interesting collection of paintings, photographs and coins, and be sure to see the royal kitchen and dining hall.
The Palace Complex fades in comparison to the beauty of the one found at Amber but it is better protected. It is filled with secret back passages for royal escape and there are
Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience) and the Khilbat Niwas (Commanders' Meeting Hall) and open pillared hall, Subhat Niwas apart from the luxurious Aram Mandir (Rest House) and the 16th century Vilas Mandir (Pleasure House).
The Lakshmi Vilas Palace is breathtaking containing a grand theatre hall for the king’s entertainment. Today, the famous puppet shows of the Fort are held here. Apart from these, there are some magnificent temples within the fort that are worth visiting such as the 10th century Shri Ram Hari Har Temple and the 12th century Kal Bhairava Temple.
End you time by enjoying a panoramic view of Jaipur from the highest point of the Fort, the seven storeyed - Diya Burj.
