Bharatpur Deeg Fort |
The first thing that strikes visitors to Deeg Fort is its 12 huge towers jutting out straight to the sky. All these towers are fitted with massive cannons in case of an attack. Even if you don’t have time for all, make it a point to climb the largest one, Lakkha Burj, the principal watch-tower. The tower has a huge cannon which is still in a good state of preservation captured from Ahmad Shah Abdali in 1761.You will be amazed by the splendid view of the countryside sprawled out like a green carpet from the height of this 70 ft high tower. It is said that on a clear sunny day one could see as far as 10 kms from here. Unfortunately, much of the Fort is in ruins today. Entrance to the Deeg Fort is by a bridge in the north.
The Jats were prone to invasions so they took extra efforts to erect the best fortifications and Deeg Fort is a living testimony to this. The Fort is enclosed by a wide moat and a protective wall spanning 8 kms in circumference made of course rubble and mud studded with 10 gateways and 72 bastions. At some points the walls are even 28 mts high and the gateway to the fort is protected with anti-elephant strikes. It took exactly 10 years for Suraj Mal to complete the whole complex.
Another interesting area is the Suraj Mal Haveli. Based on the Bangaldar or Bengali style, the domes have rounded curved bamboo roofs. It is said to have been imported to Rajasthan by the Bengali architect of Jaipur, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya.
Those in the know say that Suraj Mal had special affinity for Deeg and built many palaces around the fort replete with lush gardens and fountains. The major palaces are Gopal Bhavan, Suraj Bhavan, Nand Bhavan, Kishan Bhavan, Keshav Bhavan, Purana Mahal and Sheesh Mahal, which together comprise the Deeg Palace. The sprawling gardens are still in a good state today and they are favourite picnic spot for the locals. The gardens are designed on the famous char bagh style that was peculiar to Mughal architecture with the water source being a small lake on which the fort is set. During the festival of Holi, the fountains spring to action bursting colourful jets.
Heavily fortified with 10 gateways and 72 bastions that line its massive wall, it is a marvel along with the grand palaces.
