Owing to the innovation and relentless efforts of Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways, royal luxurious travel is now at the grasp of every men and women since 1982. These trains were used by the rulers of princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India. Superb infrastructural changes were introduced and the interiors redesigned to reflect its royal heritage. The coaches have been replaced with new air-conditioned broad gauges. Facilities include 14 saloons, 2 restaurants cum kitchen cars, one bar cum lounge and 4 service cars, a well-appointed lounge, library and services of a personal Khidmatgar (attendants).
The itinerary covers 8 days and 7 nights chugging past Delhi, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Bharatpur and Agra. It runs from October to March and April to September. The Palace on Wheels is the best means to explore the rich historical and natural wealth of Rajasthan through the daily day halts at each of these cities. Sight-seeing begins from New Delhi with visits to the India Gate, Lotus Temple, Qutab Minar, Humayun's Tomb, etc, the Hawa Mahal, Amber Fort, etc at Jaipur, the fort of Chittaurgarh, the Jag Niwas, Jag Mandir, and the City Palace at Udaipur, the latticed havelis Nathmalji-ki-haveli, Patwon-ki-haveli and Salim Singh-ki-haveli at Jaisalmer and an exciting camel ride at Sam Sand Dunes. Also, the Umaid Bhawan Palace and Mehrangarh Fort at Jodhpur, and ends at the Taj Mahal in Agra.
Along the way, wildlife safaris are made at Ranthambhore National Park for tiger spotting and bird watching. And also at Bharatpur Birds Sanctuary, the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, the nesting place of thousands of Egrets, Siberian Cranes, migratory water fowl and other species of birds.
